Used wheels and rims are one of the best values in auto parts — factory-original alloys often cost a fraction of new replacements and arrive ready to mount a tire. This guide covers everything you need to match the right wheel to your vehicle.
Getting the wrong wheel is the most common mistake. You need to match all five of these to your vehicle:
Bolt pattern — the number of lug holes and the circle diameter they sit on (e.g., 5×114.3). A wrong bolt pattern simply won't fit.
Center bore — the large center hole diameter (e.g., 73.1mm). Too small won't mount; too large needs a hub-centric ring or you risk vibration.
Offset (ET) — the distance in millimeters from the wheel's mounting face to its centerline. The wrong offset pushes wheels into the fender or out past it, causing rubbing or handling issues.
Width — must accommodate your tire size without over- or under-stretching the bead.
Diameter — must match your tire's inner diameter (e.g., 17", 18", 20").
Your vehicle's door jamb sticker lists the OEM tire size, which tells you the correct diameter and width range. Your owner's manual or a wheel fitment guide will confirm offset and bolt pattern.
Your wheel (rim) is the metal disc-and-barrel assembly the tire mounts to. On used wheels, you'll often get the TPMS sensor already installed — always verify with the seller whether the sensor is present and functional, since a missing or bad sensor triggers a dashboard warning light.
What is NOT included: the tire, center cap (may be missing), TPMS sensor battery (finite life on used units), lug nuts, and any wheel locks.
An OEM (factory original) replacement wheel is the safest choice — it's engineered specifically for your vehicle's weight, offset, and brake clearance.
Aftermarket wheels can offer upgraded looks but require more careful fitment verification, particularly brake caliper clearance.
Reconditioned wheels (also called refurbished or remanufactured) is an OEM wheel that has been restored to look and perform like a brand-new factory original.
Inspect the barrel for cracks, especially near the bead seat — a cracked barrel cannot hold air safely. ShopEarl actively filters out all listings where the seller has noted cracks, but it's best to inspect images to be sure.
Minor cosmetic curb rash on the face is common and doesn't affect function.
Bent wheels may be repairable by a wheel shop for a fraction of replacement cost; severe bends near the bead seat are a safety concern.
Most vehicles from 2008 onward are required to have TPMS. When you swap wheels, the TPMS sensors need to either be transferred, replaced, or the system relearned. If the used wheel has sensors, have a tire shop relearn them to your vehicle's system before driving.
When ordering, confirm: bolt pattern × center bore × offset × width × diameter. When in doubt, cross-reference with your OEM wheel's spec sticker (often found stamped into the back of your current wheel).

A core charge is a refundable fee charged when you buy a part that can be rebuilt or remanufactured, like an engine, alternator, or transmission. It works like a deposit:
- You pay the core charge upfront when you buy the part.
- After installing the new part, you return the old part (the “core”) to the seller.
This system encourages recycling and helps manufacturers refurbish used parts instead of making new ones from scratch.
Used parts are OEM auto parts professionally dismantled by certified auto recyclers.
Remanufactured parts are used OEM parts that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components where necessary. They're tested to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, and often come with warranties similar to new parts.
New parts are new, aftermarket components that have never been installed on a vehicle.
