Front Window Regulator Buying Guide
Power window failure is one of the most common electrical issues in used vehicles. The window regulator is the mechanism that moves the glass; the motor provides the power. Understanding which component failed saves you from buying both the regulator and motor when only one is needed.
Diagnose before ordering:
Window doesn't move at all, no sound → Likely the motor (or a switch/wiring issue). Test the switch and check fuses first.
Loud clicking/grinding, glass moves slowly or jerks → Likely the regulator (broken cable or pivot arm).
Glass moves but won't stay up → Regulator clips or cable have snapped; the motor may be fine.
Motor runs but glass doesn't move → Regulator cable is broken; the motor spins freely with no resistance.
Scissors / X-arm type — older design using a scissor-jack mechanism; relatively robust but bulky
Cable-driven type — modern design; a cable threaded through plastic guides moves the glass; prone to cable breakage when the plastic guides crack
Cable-driven regulators are the dominant failure type on modern vehicles. When the cable snaps, the glass often drops suddenly into the door.
Some listings sell the regulator only; others sell regulator + motor as a combined assembly. If your motor is good, a regulator-only purchase saves money. If both have failed — or if you can't diagnose easily — buy the combined assembly and be done.
Window regulators are specific to the door/glass position. Always specify front or rear, and driver side (left) or passenger side (right).
Front Window Regulator
The front window regulator moves the main glass in the front door. Front regulators cycle most often and are the most common failure point. Confirm whether the listing includes the motor.
Rear Window Regulator
The rear window regulator moves the glass in the rear passenger door. It is side-specific. Rear regulators see fewer cycles than fronts but use the same cable-driven design and failure modes.
Rear Quarter Window Regulator
On coupes and some SUVs, the rear quarter window (behind the door) may be powered by its own regulator. These are highly application-specific — cross-reference your original part number.
Back Glass Regulator
The back glass regulator is the slider mechanism for a power or manual sliding rear window, common on pickup trucks. It is separate from the rear glass itself. Confirm whether your truck uses a manual or power slider before ordering.
The power window motor provides the rotational force that drives the regulator. When the motor fails, the window typically won't move and makes no sound (after ruling out the switch and fuse). Motors are often sold pre-attached to the regulator as a combined assembly; a motor-only replacement is possible when the regulator is sound. Match the motor to the regulator type and the vehicle's window position.

A core charge is a refundable fee charged when you buy a part that can be rebuilt or remanufactured, like an engine, alternator, or transmission. It works like a deposit:
- You pay the core charge upfront when you buy the part.
- After installing the new part, you return the old part (the “core”) to the seller.
This system encourages recycling and helps manufacturers refurbish used parts instead of making new ones from scratch.
Used parts are OEM auto parts professionally dismantled by certified auto recyclers.
Remanufactured parts are used OEM parts that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components where necessary. They're tested to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, and often come with warranties similar to new parts.
New parts are new, aftermarket components that have never been installed on a vehicle.
