Convertible Top Motor Buying Guide
Convertible top systems combine fabric, mechanical linkage, and powered actuators to raise and lower the top. This guide covers the powered hardware most commonly replaced — the motor and the lift cylinders. These parts are highly vehicle-specific, so confirm exact fitment before ordering.
The convertible top motor is the electric motor that raises and lowers the top, either by driving a hydraulic pump (on hydraulic systems) or through a direct-drive mechanism.
Hydraulic systems: The motor/pump assembly pressurizes hydraulic fluid to extend and retract the lift cylinders. Common issues include motor failure and fluid leaks at cylinder seals. When replacing the pump, also inspect the cylinders for seeping seals — a new pump won't help if the cylinders can't hold pressure.
Before purchasing: Confirm the motor/pump assembly is specific to your vehicle's top design — hydraulic systems differ between manufacturers and even between model years of the same vehicle. The motor does not include the top hydraulic cylinders or the top fabric/header.
The convertible top lift (also called the hydraulic ram or cylinder) is the actuator that physically raises and lowers the top mechanism. Seals fail from age and UV exposure, causing the top to move slowly, stall partway, or fail to latch.
Replacement cylinders should be bled (air removed) after installation to ensure full travel. The lift does not include the top motor, pump, or top fabric. Inspect both cylinders together — if one seal has failed, the other is usually close behind.

A core charge is a refundable fee charged when you buy a part that can be rebuilt or remanufactured, like an engine, alternator, or transmission. It works like a deposit:
- You pay the core charge upfront when you buy the part.
- After installing the new part, you return the old part (the “core”) to the seller.
This system encourages recycling and helps manufacturers refurbish used parts instead of making new ones from scratch.
Used parts are OEM auto parts professionally dismantled by certified auto recyclers.
Remanufactured parts are used OEM parts that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components where necessary. They're tested to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, and often come with warranties similar to new parts.
New parts are new, aftermarket components that have never been installed on a vehicle.
