Fuel Pumps & Filters Buying Guide
The fuel system stores, delivers, and meters fuel to the engine. This guide covers fuel tanks and pumps, plus the separate diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system.
Fuel Tank
Fuel tanks fail from rust (steel tanks), cracking (plastic tanks), or collision damage. When replacing:
Steel tanks: inspect welded seams and the sender unit mounting flange for rust-through before declaring the original beyond repair
Plastic tanks: can crack from age and impacts; often a more straightforward replacement
Straps and evap lines: Fuel tank straps and evaporative emission hoses should be inspected and replaced if corroded or cracked when the tank is dropped.
Fuel Pump
The fuel pump is the heart of the fuel delivery system. When diagnosing fuel delivery issues:
Check fuel pressure with a gauge — low pressure points to pump failure
Listen for the pump prime sound (2-second hum) when the key is first turned; no sound may indicate pump or relay failure
Check the fuel pump relay and fuse before condemning the pump
In-tank pump modules combine the pump, sending unit, strainer, and pressure regulator in one drop-in unit. This is the most common modern design — replacing the module replaces all of these components together.
Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF/AdBlue) is a separate fluid system from fuel, used by the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to cut NOx emissions.
Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank
The DEF tank stores AdBlue for the SCR system. It is separate from the fuel tank. The level sensor may be integrated — verify before purchase. DEF tanks should never be filled with diesel, or vice versa — contamination destroys the SCR system.
Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Pump
The DEF pump pressurizes and meters DEF from the tank into the SCR system. It is sold separately from the tank and supply lines. DEF pump failure typically triggers warning lights and, if unaddressed, can trigger a speed-limiting "limp" mode on modern diesels.
