Exhaust System Buying Guide
The exhaust manifold bolts directly to the cylinder head and collects combustion gases from the engine's exhaust ports, channeling them into the rest of the exhaust system. It operates under extreme heat and is one of the most thermally stressed parts on the engine.
Exhaust manifolds crack from thermal cycling (heat/cool cycles) and can warp at the sealing face. Symptoms include ticking or popping sounds on cold starts that diminish as the engine warms up.
Fitment: Manifolds are engine-specific. V8 manifolds differ between the left and right bank. Material (cast iron vs. stainless tubular headers) affects heat retention and longevity.
Inspection when buying used:
Check the sealing face for warpage — a warped flange will not seal against the head and leads to repeat leaks
Inspect the casting for hairline cracks, especially around the runners and the flange bolt holes
Verify all mounting studs and bolt holes are intact and not stripped or seized
Installation: Always use new manifold gaskets and, where practical, new fasteners. Torque the bolts in the manufacturer's sequence to avoid warping the new manifold.
