AC System Buying Guide

Vehicle air conditioning is a closed system — contamination in one component affects all others. Understanding how the system works prevents buying a replacement part only to have it fail quickly because of a related issue.

Refrigerant flows in a loop through the major components:

Compressor → Condenser → Evaporator → back to Compressor

When one component fails, debris or contaminants can travel to others. This is why opening the system for any repair requires a thorough flush before new parts go in.

The AC compressor is the most expensive AC component and the most consequential failure. When a compressor seizes, metal shavings circulate throughout the entire system. If you're replacing a failed compressor:

  1. Flush the system — use an AC flush solvent to remove contaminant debris from the condenser, lines, and evaporator

  2. Verify the system is clean — debris left in the circuit will quickly damage the new compressor

Skipping the flush after a compressor failure and simply installing a new compressor almost always results in the new compressor failing within months.

The condenser is the front-mounted heat exchanger. The most common damage is from road debris piercing the fins. Inspect the core for crushed or pierced fins and check the inlet and outlet fittings for corrosion or damage before purchasing.

The evaporator sits inside the dashboard in the HVAC box — the most labor-intensive AC component to replace. Before committing to evaporator replacement (which can involve removing the entire dashboard), confirm the diagnosis with a leak detection dye test to verify the leak is in the evaporator specifically.
